Yes, these are live snails. They seem to be constantly escaping from their baskets only to be put back from time to time by the stall keeper as if they were naughty children.
Quite an array of recently live sea creatures. I can not provide the smell that goes with the scene... you will have to imagine it but not too vividly or you may get queezy as I did!
